Mission Statement

As a Catholic school, Religious Education is seen as the foundation of all other learning and the beating heart of our school community. What makes us different to other core subjects is that we seek to educate the child both academically and holistically. Our mission is not just to fashion well-educated children who do outstanding work in lessons; but to help form well-educated children who perform outstanding acts in life. Religious Education provides our children with a moral framework with which to engage with the wider world, to be a force for good in their families and in their communities. We achieve this through the promotion of shared understanding, tolerance and love.

 

As our children move through the key stages they will:

• develop an understanding of their own faith in light of Catholic Christianity;

• form an acceptance and understanding of the variety of different world faiths;

• develop an ability to critically evaluate the demands of society upon a life lived in accordance with a faith;

• nurture an understanding of the moral questions facing a person of faith in the world today and an ability to respond in a confident and respectful manner to these questions;

• realize their own purpose in life beyond the casual demands of society;

• understand their own and other’s innate importance as a child of God, regardless of race, age, creed or gender;

• develop a mastery of different mediums through which both their own, and others’ world-views and beliefs, can be clearly expressed.

 

Literacy Statement

The Religious Education Department provides opportunities to enhance the writing, reading and oral skills of students through lessons and assessments.

 

Students who are literate in Religious Education:

• listen for and recall the main points of a talk, reading or television programme, reflecting on what has been heard to ask searching questions, make comments or challenge the views expressed;

• identify and report the main points emerging from discussion;

• use appropriate reading strategies to extract particular information;

• infer and deduce meanings using evidence in the text, identifying where and how meanings are implied;

• use writing to explore and develop ideas;

• use talk to question, hypothesise, speculate, evaluate, solve problems and develop thinking about complex issues and ideas;

• make notes in different ways, choosing a form which suits the purpose;

• recognise bias and objectivity, distinguishing facts from hypotheses, theories and opinions;

• record, develop and evaluate ideas through writing;

• write with differing degrees of formality relating vocabulary and grammar to context.
