Mission Statement

The Mission of the Modern Foreign Language Department is to expand students' horizons by teaching them other languages and introducing them to other cultures as well as to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to prepare them for any kind of language endeavour. Foreign language lessons give pupils the opportunity to develop their linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the differences and similarities between French, Spanish and English. Students learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways, thus they express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. The development of communication skills, together with understanding of the structure of language, lay the foundations for future study of other languages and support the development of literacy skills in a pupil’s own language.

Learning foreign languages raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Pupils learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
